In 1896, the Swiss Armenian Aid addressed a petition to the Federal Council, calling on the Federal Council, together with the major European powers, to bring about an end to the atrocities committed against the Armenian population in Anatolia.

The petition was signed by over 433,000 people – an extraordinarily high number considering that Switzerland's resident population at the time was around 3.1 million.
